This ambitious project to migrate Washington, D.C.'s intranet and Internet sites to the Dynamic Site Framework (DSF) platform began in early 2002 and concluded in 2004.
The District’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) wanted to develop its intranet as a productivity and communications tool for district employees, enabling discussion, collaboration, publishing and exchange of information.
"We are one city, one government; thus the goal is to improve communications and to reduce the burden on the employee to visit or call agencies to receive services, such as benefits updates," says a District spokesperson.
"Further, the intranet must be a platform for the delivery of agency-specific Web-based applications. The intranet vision is to deliver common applications, services, and information, presented in the user’s Web browser via an enterprise portal, as well as to support the business functions of the District."
The Solution The District of Columbia procured DSF as its standard content management platform. This solution enabled the efficient, secure, and timely building and management of the District's intranet.
As the prime contractor, Cimbrian implemented the DSF installation for the intranet, then tackled the District's 65 agency Internet sites at DC.GOV. Since DSF is a scalable platform, DC OCTO was able to move agencies onto the platform over a period of two years rather than doing it all at once. All sites went through Cimbrian's Web QA process as well as the client's QA process, providing a unique opportunity to find and correct link and content errors that had crept into the sites over the years.
